Types of splits

Even splits

This simply means running each split at the same average pace.

Negative splits

A negative split means running the second half of a race faster than the first. This is typically the best strategy for longer distances such as the 10k, half marathon, and marathon. It helps you conserve energy early on, avoid hitting the wall, and finish strong with your fastest running in the closing stages.

Positive splits

A positive split is when the first half is quicker than the second. While risky in long races, it's often the most effective approach for middle-distance events such as the 800 metres, where athletes go out hard and aim to hold on. For these shorter races, a fast start can be the key to achieving a personal best.

Why even splits matter for distance running

Most runners perform best when they run at a steady pace from start to finish. Even splits make the most efficient use of energy and reduce the risk of burning out.

Data from world records and major marathons shows that, for long-distance events, the fastest times almost always come from even pacing.

By knowing your exact split times in advance, you give yourself the best chance of holding a consistent pace and finishing strong.
