Introduction
The Kosmin test is a race predictor for middle-distance runners that can be used to estimate 800m or 1500m performance. The test is best completed on a running track with the help of a timekeeper.
Test procedure
Both involve repeated 60-second runs, but the test procedure is slightly different for 800m and 1500m.
800m test
The athlete runs flat-out for 60 seconds and the distance covered is measured. After a three-minute recovery, the athlete completes another 60-second effort and the distance covered in measured.
The two distances are added and the total is used to calculate an estimate of 800 metre race time.
1500m test
The athlete runs flat-out for 60 seconds and the distance covered is measured. The athlete then takes a three-minute recovery.
The athlete runs flat-out for another 60 seconds and the distance covered is measured. The athlete now takes a two-minute recovery.
The athlete again runs flat-out for 60 seconds and the distance covered is measured. The athlete now takes a one-minute recovery.
The athlete runs a final 60-second effort and the distance covered is measured.
The four distances are added and the total is used to calculate an estimate of 1500 metre race time.
Benefits
The Kosmin test differs from most other race prediction calculations in that it is based on a test that is specific for the distance for which a prediction is desired. Thus, it is more likely to predict a realistic race time.
Using the calculator
To use the calculator simply choose the test distance and your sex, enter the total distance covered during the test, and hit Calculate.
How It Works
Different formulas are used for the 800m test and the 1500m test and the formulas used for men and women are also different. They're summarised in the table below.
Test | Formula |
---|---|
800m Men | 217.77778 - (Total Distance × 0.119556) |
800m Women | 1451.46 - (198.54 × Log(Total Distance)) |
1500m Men | 500.52609 - (Total Distance × 0.162174) |
1500m Women | 500.52609 - (Total Distance × 0.162174) + 10 |
